Don’t Go Back There

The global pandemic has affected different people and different businesses in different ways.

One of the things I am seeing a lot of is that many businesses, having successfully scaled back and survived are now having to scale up again. It all sounds good so far, but in scaling back or mothballing part or all of the business we were forced to make some decisions that maybe we should have made earlier. We naturally released the ‘C’ players, either on furlough or permanently. We possibly did the same with some parts of our business and some customers.

For me, face to face was replaced entirely by on line.

It is tempting to assume that as we come out of lockdown we will return to the way things were before. Perhaps you shouldn’t be thinking that way for two reasons. Firstly the world that we are released into will not be the world we locked ourselves away from. Too much will have changed, and secondly, do you really want to start filling your business up with the ‘C’ players you were happy to let go and the ‘C’ grade customers that you had before lock down?

I often describe running a business as being like trying to fix a plane while it is in mid flight. If you have had the chance to stop or slow the madness enough to do some necessary maintenance think about what you have learned before you start to repeat the mistakes a second time by going back to where you were, particularly if where you were wasn’t that great.

There are lots of challenges in the world but a business that is run well can benefit the world more than almost anything else, creating purpose, dignity, and wealth in honest and worthwhile work, but it is a competitive place in which to thrive.
