Inch By Inch

After almost a year of lockdown I was relatively pleased. I had managed to stay reasonably fit (by walking the dog) and had kept the weight off, but I realised I was less strong and flexible than I was and certainly than I would like to be.

So I decided to do something about it. I devised a simple morning routine of about 30 minutes of exercises using zero equipment apart from a balance board that I got from Amazon for about £12.

Working with my coach I decided to adopt a different strategy. I am normally very good at setting stretch goals, that I attack with vigour. My normal approach to life! I almost always hit my goals but end up exhausted and knackered as a result and consequently slip backwards. Think yoyo dieters and you will recognise the pattern.

So this time I decided to be less ambitious and more consistent. A conversation with a client really helped. He told me about a specific and very simple exercise that sounded impossible. He said ‘you will find that after about 6 months you can do this exercise easily and effortlessly’. I thought ‘Wow, who takes a 6 months horizon to do something like that?’.

This morning I realised that I am now doing all of the morning exercises easily and effortlessly. The effect is clear for all to see and it has been about 6 months since I started this discipline.

Proving 2 things to me for sure.

  1. If the tactics that you are using are no longer working: try something else, and
  2. Inch by inch life’s a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard.

Why did it take me so long to learn this?
