On the Scale Up journey of every business and every business leader there are a number of identifiable pivot points. Points where things need to change, to evolve and to improve that are critical to the continued growth and success of the enterprise.
One of those pivot points is around team and involves the need to get the right people on the bus. Not only the right people but the right people in the right seats doing the right things right. As a business grows it becomes exponentially more complicated and so the people decisions become ever more important.
But it doesn’t stop with recruitment. As Pat Lencioni once wrote “If you could get all the people in the organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, at any time.”. Aligning the team is mission critical. It refers to this thing that we call leadership. The concepts underpinning all of this may be difficult to get our brains around intellectually but the level of intellectual difficulty is nothing to the challenge of developing the skills required to do it effectively.
Fortunately, there are a number of tools that are relatively straightforward and that any of us can use, which will never replace great leadership, but which will make aligning the team much more likely and which will also create a context within which great leadership can be developed and flourish.
Those tools include things like the meeting rhythm, core values and core purpose. Buckminster Fuller once said “You can’t change the way people think, all you can do is give them a tool, the use of which will change their thinking.”
