They Have Got To Want To

I am a big believer in the power of team work as you probably know, and teamwork is a strange and fickle concept. Fickle in the sense that it isn’t necessarily easy or straightforward to generate or to maintain.

One of the concepts that predominates the modern world is that of choice. People have, and exercise, more choice, more often and more readily than ever before. We are used to choosing our mobile provider, our energy supplier, our employers and even our gender in ways that we never could have done a few years ago. Hybrid working implies giving employees a choice about where they work and when or if they ever come into the office.

Autonomy is a big concept in psychology and team dynamics. Team members have a choice as to whether they are going to engage with your business and what it is trying to achieve or not. Whether they are going to engage in your Core Values and Core Purpose, or not (you do have them, don’t you? ). Like all choices, they are not choices that we make once and forget. They are choices that we make and remake every hour of every day. If you are failing to engage your people every hour of every day you can almost guarantee you will be losing them every hour of every day. Can you afford to do that?

Gallup have data that shows that globally only about 15% of the workforce are ‘engaged’ with the businesses they are in and you can only start to begin to understand the cost of this but perhaps that great philosopher Homer Simpson said it best when he said “If adults don’t like their jobs they don’t go on strike. They just go in every day and do it really half-arsed”. For teamwork to stand a chance you will need to be helping your people to choose to want the same results for customers, stakeholders and themselves as you do. It isn’t easy but it can be done once you know how.

I am on a mission to help business leaders get better financial results with less stress and more time to enjoy it and I promise by committing to working with me, you will feel better, more hopeful, more optimistic, more confident and less stressed. You will grow. Your business will grow in sales, profits and value. You will have a happier, more committed and engaged team and your quality of life will improve.
