The Top 5 Business Words
So I wondered what are your top five business words? I have had a go myself and I have a starting list. I wonder which you will agree with and which you will disagree with; which will you have at the top of the list and which at the bottom?
The word for this week is momentum. Variously defined in the dictionary as “the force that keeps an object moving or keeps an event developing after it has started” I believe that physicists would define it as Mass multiplied by Velocity.
Jim Collins explained the ‘flywheel effect’ in the book ‘Good to Great’, explaining how good-to-great transformations never happen in one fell swoop, but over time, saying the process resembles relentlessly pushing a giant, heavy flywheel, turn upon turn, building momentum until a point of breakthrough, and beyond.
Businesses can be slow to get moving. Forward movement can be hard to come by. Once it arrives, cherish it. Nurture it, in whatever form it takes. Do everything you can to build the momentum which is so precious, so hard earned. Once the momentum begins, it becomes relatively more easy to build. I say relatively because it still takes effort, just not quite so much. It takes much more mechanical effort to get your car away from the traffic lights than it does to keep it rolling down the motorway.
Never take momentum for granted. The moment you do, the moment you stop putting the effort in, inertia will overtake momentum. The flywheel will begin to slow and eventually it will stop.
Think of a children’s merry go round. It takes a lot of effort to get it moving, once that inertia has been overcome it is relatively easier to get it spinning faster and faster, but the moment you stop putting in the effort inertia takes over again and the merry go round will slow and stop. So too with businesses. Momentum is your friend. Use it wisely.
Over the next few weeks in this blog and in my 2020 seminars I will be examining what it means to be a successful and smart leader. Our Free seminars began again in January with the next one being Tuesday 24th March 9.30am at Wynyard Hall. Why not come along? It’s never too late to make a start to become the leader your organisation needs you to be.
