What Is Your a to C Score?

How many of your team are A players?

Take a simple two by two matrix, with performance being the horizontal axis and core values being the vertical axis. An A player lives in the top right hand quadrant. An A player consistently performs well and lives the company’s values. Plot your team on the matrix, honestly. How many have you placed in the top right hand quadrant? How many elsewhere on the matrix? A more subjective question would be how many of your team would you enthusiastically rehire tomorrow? Experience tells me it is very few. How different would your team look if you could replace some of the C players -low performance and poor display of your core values-with A players? How different would your life feel if you didn’t have to do all of the thinking for everyone all the time? How much better would the bottom line be if everyone was a high performer? What is your A to C ratio? This is a key performance indicator. Maybe the key performance indicator. Would you need so many people if more were A players? Jack Welch reminded us that nothing matters more in winning than getting the right people on the field.

Over the next few weeks I will be looking at why recruiting A players is so important. Why it is so unlikely if we recruit the way we always have done and telling you what you can do about it.
